On the Saturday night when the pub was packed with 150 people, the INLA planted a bomb which was placed next to a structural column, causing the building to collapse. This atrocity killed 17 (including 8 members of the 1/Cheshires) and injured 30. The bar was rename “The Riverside Bar” in 2008.

“A Lance Corporal stationed at Ballykelly, anonymously recalled the bombing on the Shared Troubles website: “Life in Ballykelly was never the same for both our civilian friends and families and our own military community. There remained a sense of disbelief and cautious awareness by us all. The scars of 6th December 1982 will stay with many of us for all our lives. People have been affected in many different ways by the horrific events of that night”.”
