November 24th

100 years ago today 24/11/1915: Remembering Lance Corporal  T Pedley 1st/7th Bn. East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.

The 7th battalion was raised in Macclesfield, Cheshire (as was I); serving in Gallipoli, part of Suvla Bay landings in August 1915. Here are a couple of photos from the war memorial in Macclesfied. If you visit, why not pop along to The Treacle Tap on Sunderland Street for a Belgian beer.

WW2: 19/11/1944: Remembering Private Fred Wright (Age 34) 2nd Bn. Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Netherlands. Son of James and Catherine Wright; husband of Mary Elizabeth Wright, of Newton Hyde, Cheshire.

2nd Bn. as part of 50th Division, after operation ‘Market Garden’ (Arnhem) were near Nijmegan (where the Jonkerbos cemetery is located), where they ended up “The Island” also mentioned in the “Band of Brothers” book (Stephen E. Ambrose) and excellent HBO TV show of the smae name. See image below and note TT showing 50th division.

note: I was never happy with the old “bridge too far” bit, it wasn’t like “if only we’d stopped at Nijmegan we would have been fine”, the whole point was to get the bridge at Arnhem.

The cemetery is near Belgian border, due south of Poperinge.

1942: Serjeant David Joseph Macpherson (Age 32) 6th Bn. El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt. Son of David Archibald Macpherson and of Teresa Macpherson (Nee Martin); husband of Johanna Christina Macpherson, of Higher Broughton, Salford, Lancashire.

 

Monty’s birthday: Bernard Law Montgomery born 17th November 1887 (and Sgt Macpherson buried at El Alamein!). Also Emporer Vespasian born 9AD.
