WW1: 100 years ago today 16/11/1915: Remembering Private J Ashcroft 1st Bn. Citadel New Military Cemetery, Fricourt, France.

Citadel New Military Cemetery, Fricourt is about 5km south-east of Albert, Somme (actually right at the end of the Albert Aerodrome runway).

WW2: Major Richard Harold Dixon MC (Age 29) Leros War Cemetery, Greece. Son of The Revd. Canon Alfred Cecil Dixon, B.A., and of Blanche Marguerite Dixon, of Little Sutton, Cheshire.

Leros War Cemetery is on the Island of Leros, quite close to the Turkish coast (Bodrum). So the question why was a 29 year old Major and MC here? If I find out I’ll let you know.

From Crookenden’s history of the regiment in WW2….”the loss in action of Richard Dixon deprived the Regiment of one of it’s finest and most promising officers.”

CR Dixon

So far the blog is raising more questions than answers for me…..

The Chesire Regiment

HI, I am Cheshire born and bred now living in Australia. This blog is just me paying tribute to those men of the Cheshire Regiment who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I will be showing the information available from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site (www.cwgc.org ) for WW1 and WW2, plus anything else I find or think is interesting. Rather than just listing the information I’d like to put in some kind of context; for example, tomorrow (16/11/1915) Private Ashcroft, why were 1st Battalion near the Somme, 7 ½ months before the place became forever synonymous with suffering and loss. I intend to increase the scope to post 1945 conflict and peace keeping operations, give it time.

Lest we forget….ever glorious
